The Sailor, the Chocolate Cake, and the Ship's Cook

A sailor walked into the ship's mess hall after a long morning at sea. One glance at the lunch line was enough to ruin his appetite. The stew looked suspicious, the vegetables seemed overcooked, and whatever was sitting in the last serving tray didn't look edible at all.

Instead of filling a plate, he grabbed a huge slice of chocolate cake and headed for a table.

The ship's cook noticed immediately.

“Is that all you're going to eat?” the cook asked.

“Yep,” the sailor replied. “The rest of the food doesn't look very appetizing.”

The cook smiled.

“That's interesting,” he said.

“Why?” asked the sailor.

The cook leaned on the counter and replied,

“Because that chocolate cake is made from all the things you just refused to eat.”

The sailor nearly dropped his fork.

“What do you mean?”

The cook grinned.

“The vegetables became the cake filling. The milk went into the frosting. The eggs are in the batter. And the flour was headed for the bread you skipped.”

The sailor looked relieved.

“That's not so bad.”

The cook nodded.

“True.”

Then he added,

“Of course, the brown color came from the stew.”

The sailor turned pale.

“The stew?”

“Yep,” said the cook. “Nobody wanted it yesterday either.”

The entire mess hall burst out laughing.

The sailor stared at the cake for a moment, slowly pushed it away, and said,

“You know what? Suddenly the vegetables don't look so bad.”
